Tackle Recommendations:

Fly fishing tackle

For tarpon: two, three or four piece rod wt. 11 to 14, with an intermediate weight line. If you have a spare rod, bring it. For fishing from shore a 9 wt. is perfect. Reel should hold 250-350 yards of 30-pound backing. Two lines are used: intermediate sink monocore and on occasion a 400 grain Teeney

Fly fishing flies

Tarpon and snook flies: Tarponville custom makes flies (see photos above) and lures for the Manzanillo area. Some of these flies and custom lures are not available in catalogs or fly shops. The best flies are green, chartreuse and white on 4/0 or 5/0 hooks, as shown above. Big deceivers are good. Look for white marabou, topped by chartreuse marabou topped by green mylar, with a little red throat (paste on eyes are optional as they tend to fall off anyway).  You can vary that pattern with some blue or olive.

Recommended tarpon flies and shock leaders are available for you at the lodge.

We have top quality rods and reels for rent at $25/day.  We recommend 100-pound shock tippet with 20-pound class leader.

Conventional tackle

For tarpon: a stiff rod and spinning or casting reel, 200-300 yards of 20-pound test line.   Bring 600 extra yards of 20 pound line.

For snook: a medium weight rod with 10- to 12-pound test line. Bass tackle is fine.  Tarponville does not provide conventional tackle.

Conventional lures

For tarpon:

  • Coast Hawks 1 oz various colors,
  • Bay Slayers 1 oz. (they have replaced the Coast Hawks)
  • Jigs multi-colors in bucktail and jelly tails, 1-1.5 oz
